Polyaigos Island

Stylish accommodation

Many years before I came to Kimolos, I happened to attend a discussion with the crew members of a yacht about the areas they had visited. Due to their professional status, they were fortunate to visit every corner of Greece, even places inaccessible to common people. They all agreed that the most beautiful place they had seen was an uninhabited island next to Kimolos—the island of Polyaigos.

When we finally visited Kimolos for the first time, I remembered this conversation and did not miss the opportunity. Having nothing to do with the art of the sea, we borrowed a wooden boat and trusted the most experienced member of the group who, according to his statement, had done it before. This wooden boat led us to Polyaigos and the Blue Bay. Love at first sight! Eternal love that lasts over time as every visit to the island reveals something different.

Included in the Natura 2000 network as a protected area for the conservation of biodiversity, the island is a refuge for rare flora and fauna, including the Mediterranean monk seal, one of the most endangered marine species in the world. I could try to describe the unique coastline of the island, the impressive rock formations, and secluded beaches, the eerie white rocks that emerge in the middle of the sea, the imposing caves, the blue of the sea, the wild goats that climb comfortably the steep slopes to cool off in the sea, but whatever I write will be very poor compared to reality.

So I will simply urge you to visit it. You can rent a boat or book a place on one boat that organizes day trips having also the chance to enjoy the stories of Captain Vangelis and Avgoustis. The excursion boats start from Psathi and shape their program according to the weather to stop at two or three different places and beaches.

To summarize, if you choose to visit Polyaigos, remember that it will give you an experience beyond the typical tourist product, offering you a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of the Cyclades.
