Direct Access

You can reach Kimolos by ferry from Piraeus (or Lavrio), with intermediate stops at other Cycladic islands. Depending on the route, typical stops may include Kythnos, Serifos, Sifnos, and possibly Milos.

The duration of the journey depends on the number of stops, weather conditions, and passenger traffic. During peak seasons, docking times at each port may be slightly longer than scheduled.

Journey Duration: From 6 hours up to… (varies based on conditions).

  • Pros: You can drive to Piraeus (or Lavrio) and then take it to Kimolos.
  • Cons: The travel time may be longer than it is expected.
  • Tip: Choose a route with as few stops as possible. If available, book numbered seats, especially during peak periods.

Via Milos (by Ferry or Plane)

The closest island to Kimolos is Milos, which you can reach by ferry or air.

By Ferry:Milos is connected to the ports of Piraeus and Lavrio and has multiple daily routes operated by various ferry companies. In addition to conventional ferries, high-speed vessels also serve the Piraeus–Milos route, completing the journey in approximately 4–4.5 hours. A budget-friendly option is the Minoan Lines route from Piraeus to Crete, with an intermediate stop in Milos. This trip also takes around 4.5 hours. A key advantage of this service is the large vessels, which offer a smoother journey even in rough seas.

By Plane: You can also fly to Milos via Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” to Milos National Airport. During the summer, there are frequent direct flights from Athens to Milos, with a flight duration of approximately 45 minutes. Airlines operating flights to Milos include Aegean, Olympic Air, and Sky Express.

Milos – Kimolos (Ferry Connection)

Regardless of how you travel to Milos, once you arrive, you’ll need to head to Pollonia (Apollonia), a small port on the island’s northern side. If you don’t have your vehicle, you can take a taxi (booking available) or a bus (check the schedule on the Milos municipal website: Milos Buses). The drive from Milos Airport or the main port to Pollonia takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Milos and Kimolos are connected daily by the local ferry “Osia Methodia”, which departs from Psathi (Kimolos’ port) and arrives in Pollonia (Milos).

  • Journey duration: 25 minutes
  • Ticketing: No reservations—boarding is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Schedules:ConvFrequent crossings, with increased frequency during the summer. You may find the timetable here.

Travel via Milos pros & cons

    • Pros: There are more travel options to Milos and shorter ferry rides. Less time spent on a ferry (though not necessarily a shorter overall journey). You Have the opportunity to enjoy a coffee break in Milos.
    • Cons: If winds exceed 6+ Beaufort, the ferry service is suspended, meaning you might get stuck in Milos. In such cases, you can either check for a conventional ferry from Milos’ main port to Kimolos (1-hour journey), though these routes are not daily, or you can take a sea taxi, but you’ll have to leave your car behind in Milos until the ferry resumes service.
    • Tip: Since the conventional ferry connection between Milos and Kimolos is not daily, plan your travel on a day and time when you have a backup option (like a conventional ferry) in case of cancellations.

Island Hopping

Kimolos is also a stop on the intra-Cycladic ferry routes, which connect various islands within the Cyclades, including Andros, Ios, Kea, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros, Tinos, and Folegandros.
If you’re interested in island hopping, these routes offer a fantastic way to explore multiple destinations. You can easily find ferry schedules and book tickets online using platforms like Ferry hopper or other booking websites.

Important Note: The local ferry “Osia Methodia” (which operates the Kimolos–Milos–Kimolos route) does not appear on online booking platforms, as tickets are not issued electronically. You must purchase them in person at the port.
